A remarkable and highly decorative mid-19th century Grand Tour carved wood souvenir depicting the legendary Lion of Lucerne, one of the most powerful and enduring symbols of loyalty, sacrifice, and courage in European history. Expertly hand-carved on an impressive scale, this sculpture showcases exceptional craftsmanship, with deeply modeled fur, a flowing mane, expressive facial features, and finely rendered details throughout. The sculptor skillfully captured the lion in repose, conveying both strength and solemnity, creating a work that is as moving as it is visually striking.
The original Lion of Lucerne monument was designed by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved into a sandstone cliff in Lucerne, Switzerland, in 1820–1821. It commemorates the Swiss Guards who lost their lives defending King Louis XVI and the French royal family during the French Revolution, particularly during the storming of the Tuileries Palace in 1792. Mark Twain famously described the monument as "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world," a testament to its emotional impact and enduring legacy.
Substantial in size and beautifully executed, this sculpture measures approximately 10 inches wide, 4 inches high, and 3.75 inches deep. Good antique condition with aged surface and light wear to the wood. There is a very old newspaper clipping about the monument pasted to base. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
During the 19th century, affluent travelers embarking on the Grand Tour often acquired finely crafted souvenirs depicting Europe's most celebrated monuments and landmarks. Pieces such as this served as treasured reminders of their travels and as sophisticated decorative objects for the home. The Latin inscription and heraldic details further enhance its historical appeal, while the rich aged patina developed over more than a century lends warmth and authenticity.
Whether displayed in a library, study, office, or among a collection of Grand Tour artifacts, it makes an impressive statement piece and a fascinating conversation starter. A wonderful example of 19th-century craftsmanship and European decorative art, combining history, symbolism, and artistry in one exceptional object.
