An extraordinary example of late 19th-century Chinese export silver, this circa 1880 900 sterling silver card case is a masterwork of craftsmanship and artistry. Richly decorated with intricate hand-worked detail, the front is dominated by a powerful high-relief dragon weaving through stylized clouds, symbolizing strength, prosperity, and protection. At the center rests an elegant monogrammed cartouche, adding a refined personal touch to this already striking composition.
The reverse is equally captivating, featuring beautifully rendered birds among bamboo, a classic motif in Chinese decorative arts representing harmony, resilience, and longevity. Every surface displays meticulous hand-hammered texture and finely chased detailing, showcasing the exceptional skill of the silversmith.
The case measures approximately 3 inches deep, 2 inches wide, and just over 0.25 inches high. Total weight is 53 grams. Please note this is a smaller sized case. It will not fit modern business cards or credit cards. Review the size carefully if you have specific size requirements as we do not offer returns. Very good condition, please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Crafted from high-grade 900 silver, this piece possesses a luminous tone and remarkable depth to the decoration. The condition is particularly impressive, the case appears to have been minimally handled over the last century, with the fine details remaining unusually crisp and sharp. The edges are clean, the relief work remains boldly defined, and the overall presentation is superb.
Originally intended for calling cards, this elegant antique today serves equally well as a sophisticated collector’s object, a luxurious desk accessory, or a striking display piece within an English country house, Asian-inspired, or eclectic interior.
A rare and highly decorative piece of Chinese export silver refined, tactile, and unmistakably luxurious.
