Introduction
An original signed oil-on-canvas American Western landscape by the British Cornish artist Dennis Herbert Trewartha, depicting the historic Chisum Trail amid the expansive desert scenery of New Mexico, U.S.A.
Inspired by the artist’s personal journey through New Mexico in 2001, the work is signed and dated “D.H.T. 2002” to the lower right. The reverse bears the extensive handwritten inscription: “D. H. Trewartha – Chisum Trail – New Mexico – U.S.A. 2001”.
The inscription establishes the painting as a personal visual record of Trewartha’s travels rather than an entirely imagined interpretation of the American West. The difference between the 2001 inscription and the 2002 painted signature suggests that the work was completed following his return, using firsthand observations, sketches, photographs or recollections.
Trewartha presents a sweeping view across sunlit desert terrain towards a succession of rugged mountain ridges beneath a broad blue sky. Characteristic yucca, shrubs, dry grasses and weathered vegetation articulate the foreground.
A solitary coyote-like animal stands alert among the vegetation, lending scale, movement and subtle narrative interest. Its quiet presence reinforces the sense of wilderness while reflecting Trewartha’s established interest in wildlife subjects.

Catalogue Note
The landscape is constructed through a carefully arranged sequence of foreground vegetation, open desert terrain and distant mountain ridges. This layered structure leads the viewer gradually into the scene while conveying the impressive scale and remoteness of the American Southwest.
Trewartha employs a restrained natural palette of sandy ochres, muted greens, warm browns and violet-grey mountain tones. A broad blue sky introduces openness and light, balancing the more detailed handling of the foreground.
Delicate linear brushwork defines the yucca, grasses, shrubs and weathered branches, while broader passages describe the sky and distant mountains. The result combines careful observation with strong decorative appeal.
The small coyote-like animal provides a discreet focal point without disturbing the contemplative atmosphere. Its inclusion brings life to the landscape and enhances the painting’s visual narrative.
The Location: Chisum Trail, New Mexico
The Chisum Trail was associated with John Simpson Chisum, the influential nineteenth-century cattle rancher remembered as the “Cattle King of the Pecos”.
Chisum established extensive cattle-ranching interests along the Pecos River in southeastern New Mexico. He supplied cattle to settlements, military establishments and Indigenous agencies, becoming an important figure in the commercial development of the territorial American West.
The route associated with his operations crossed areas of southern New Mexico towards Arizona. It should not be confused with the better-known Chisholm Trail, which principally carried cattle northwards from Texas towards railway markets in Kansas.
The mountainous, semi-arid landscape represented in this painting is consistent with the general terrain of southern New Mexico. The precise viewpoint, however, has not been independently identified and is catalogued according to the artist’s original inscription.
The Artist
Dennis Herbert Trewartha was a British regional artist and businessman who lived and worked in Callington, Cornwall.
Alongside his association with the longstanding Callington family business Trewartha’s, he maintained a sustained private artistic practice encompassing Cornish landscapes, coastal and maritime views, flowers, livestock, birds, wildlife and scenes inspired by international travel.
Working principally in oils on canvas or board, Trewartha favoured recognisable subjects, carefully observed natural detail and traditionally arranged compositions. His paintings may be signed “D.H.T.”, “DHT”, “Trewartha” or with his full name inscribed on the reverse.
Known dated works indicate an active painting career extending across at least two decades. His surviving works include a Norwegian fjord landscape dated 1996, Cornish coastal paintings, floral still lifes and numerous studies of native and exotic wildlife.
Trewartha’s journey through New Mexico in 2001 inspired the present composition. This makes Chisum Trail an unusual international subject within his work and an appealing meeting between Cornish regional painting and the traditions of the American Western landscape.
Trewartha remained closely associated with Callington throughout his later life and died peacefully at his home in September 2021, aged 90.
