Entirely crafted from chiseled and worked iron, the piece depicts a stylized stork whose sculptural form cleverly incorporates the cigar-cutting function. The handmade surface, visible hammering, and deliberately restrained treatment of the metal are characteristic of the aesthetic associated with Hugo Berger and the Goberg workshops. Berger's work embraced the principles of the Arts & Crafts movement, emphasizing traditional craftsmanship, functional design, and the expressive qualities of honest materials such as iron and brass. Rather than concealing the manufacturing process, his objects celebrated the marks of hand-working, giving each piece an individual and distinctly artisanal character. In 1895, Hugo Berger established his metalworking business in Schmalkalden, Germany, producing decorative and functional metal objects. During the early decades of the 20th century, Goberg designs achieved international recognition and were retailed by prestigious establishments, most notably Liberty & Co. in London. Animal-form objects were particularly well suited to Berger's inventive approach to functional design, transforming practical household accessories into whimsical sculptural objects. This stork-form cigar cutter is a charming example, combining humor, functionality, and the restrained geometry of German Arts & Crafts metalwork. The piece is unsigned and therefore presented as attributed to Hugo Berger / Goberg, based on its design, materials, construction, and stylistic characteristics. A rare collector's object ideal for a collection of Goberg metalwork, Arts & Crafts design, antique smoking accessories, or early 20th-century European decorative arts.
