The composition is associated with Auguste Victor Deroy, with engraving by Émile Tilly, and belongs to the tradition of detailed illustrated views produced for important French publications of the period, including L'Illustration. The printed caption beneath the image identifies the subject as a panoramic view of the Champ de Mars and the Trocadéro. At the exact center rises the Eiffel Tower, completed for the exhibition and dramatically emphasizing the symmetry and monumental scale of the fairgrounds. To the Champ de Mars side stretches the vast complex of exhibition and industrial pavilions, including the celebrated Galerie des Machines, one of the great engineering achievements of the 19th century. The River Seine cuts through the panorama, animated by boats, steam vessels and quays serving the enormous number of visitors attending the exhibition. Across the river, the composition extends toward the Trocadéro, with its gardens and the former Palais du Trocadéro providing an imposing architectural counterpoint to the exhibition grounds. The 1889 Exposition Universelle commemorated the centenary of the French Revolution and became one of the defining international exhibitions of the 19th century. Above all, it introduced the world to Gustave Eiffel's extraordinary iron tower, originally conceived as a temporary structure but ultimately transformed into one of the most recognizable monuments in architectural history. with its remarkable 121 cm width, this panoramic work has considerable decorative impact while providing a fascinating visual record of Paris at a pivotal moment in the history of modern architecture, engineering and international exhibitions. An exceptional piece for a collection of Parisian iconography, architectural engravings, World's Fair memorabilia, Eiffel Tower material, or 19th-century French graphic art.
