The sculpture depicts a bear modeled with considerable character and attention to detail. The fur, facial features, paws, and naturalistic posture are carefully carved by hand, while the inset glass eyes give the animal a particularly expressive and lifelike appearance. Ingeniously conceived as both a sculpture and a functional writing accessory, the bear incorporates a compartment containing a glass ink pot, used for writing with a dip pen.
