Rare and elegant perfume bottle (or toilet bottle), complete with its original frosted glass paste stopper, made of blown Murano glass from the late 19th century (circa 1880-1900). The piece is unsigned and can be attributed with high certainty to the prestigious Salviati & C. factory (then Compagnia Venezia Murano), which established itself on international markets thanks to the philological rediscovery of "old-fashioned" glass. The body of the bottle is distinguished by the use of a sophisticated milky-white opaline glass paste, whose rich, mellow opacity is a clear indication of the Art Nouveau era. The neck of the piece is embellished with a refined decorative pattern composed of sapphire-blue glass threads, spiraled under heat, tapering to a sculptural handle terminating in a relief cameo depicting a classical motif inspired by Roman archaeology. The choice of this specific attribution to Salviati, preferable to other contemporary artists such as the Toso Brothers, is objectively supported by the purity of the historicist decoration and the characteristic pattern of the rough pontil on the bottom, the "scar," which varies from glassworks to glassworks and is left by the separation of the glass from the rod (pontello) to which it was attached during the various stages of production. These are distinctive features of the excellent archaeological catalogue of this famous late-19th-century glassworks.
This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
