Batt. … Read more From the piranesi's series “vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne, ed ornamenti antichi disegnati ed incisi dal cav. Gio. Batt. Piranesi pubblicati l’anno mdcclxxiix” (1778). Antiche urne cinerarie e lampade" is an artist proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, large margins, representing antique marble cinerary urns - “found into antique graves in siena”- and lamps with lower printed note. This etching is dedicated “to sir. Francesco dickins, english cavaliere and patron of fine arts, as a mark of profound respect, cavaliere gio. Batta piranesi d.d.d.“. Excellent condition, despite a browned paper and some foxing marks on margins. Signed on plate “cavalier piranesi f.” on the lower left. Image dimensions : 41 x 65 cm undoubtedly piranesi was one of the most important engravers in 18th century even if he was well-known as an architect and an archaeologist: the greatest engraver in the period from rembrandt a goya. The generations after him have continued to imagine the ancient rome as the artist has portrayed his magnificent in "vedute". References: l.
