An exceptional original copper-engraved atlas map by Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598), the renowned Flemish cartographer whose Theatrum Orbis Terrarum is universally regarded as the world’s first modern atlas. This impressive sheet combines the regions of Gallia Narbonensis, Sabaudiae Ducatus, and Venuxini Comitatus, depicting southern France, Savoy, and the Comtat Venaissin in remarkable Renaissance detail. Printed in Antwerp from an engraved copperplate and featuring early hand coloring, the map reflects the extraordinary craftsmanship that made Ortelius’ atlases among the most influential publications in the history of cartography. The reverse retains the original Latin letterpress text, characteristic of the early Latin editions published around the turn of the 17th century. Few historical objects connect so directly with the beginnings of European exploration and the formation of the modern world. This map was produced only a few decades after the voyages of Columbus and during the earliest period of European settlement in North America. It predates the founding of Jamestown (1607) or was created around that era, and was already an antique long before the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Owning an original Ortelius map means owning a genuine witness to the earliest chapters of American history. The sheet is preserved in good to very good antique condition. It retains wide original margins, attractive period color, and a strong, well-defined impression. A small tear is present in the upper margin; however, it is hidden beneath the mat when framed and is not visible during display. For the safest possible international transport, the map will be removed from the frame prior to shipping. The sheet will be professionally protected and packed separately to prevent stress or glass-related damage. The vintage wooden frame and mat will be included with the shipment, allowing the new owner to reassemble or professionally reframe the artwork upon arrival. An outstanding collector’s piece and an important Renaissance cartographic work, equally suitable for an advanced map collection, a distinguished library, or an elegant interior.
