I liked it right away, knew nothing about mirror frames, materials or time periods… I got it for a good deal and took it home. That’s where I found out that it’s actually a pretty rare Antique 1960’s Ornate Oakwood and Brass/Zinc Alloy, Metal-Wrapped Accent Wall Mirror.
I picked up this beauty from a storage unit sale earlier this year. It is heavy and well made with good structure and quality mounting! These are the things that drew me to it initially; then after researching the many possibilities of who it was made by, and in what time period… I grew to like it more and more. There’s no way to be sure, due to it not being stamped by production or artist, but I have an educated guess. I read about a small surge of popularity in bead-rolled metal work or “blacksmithing” (on a smaller more cool in temperature and safer scale). And I think what happened is that it took someone more time and patience to create each piece than traditional blacksmithing, and though safer, more time meant it would cost the customer more money. It was a great idea that faded as quickly as it started, which is understandable but kind of sad too. And again: this is my own educated guess based on what I could find. But it seems they eventually got the same idea out into machine production and that’s basically took the jobs of all blacksmiths later on…
So, as I said to start: to acquire one of these mirrors is quite the find indeed!! Popularity with this type of bead-rolling was here in the USA, Russia, Italy and a little in South America (I think); around the 1960’s mostly. And even if I’m wrong and there is another explanation out there… I did know this: there aren’t many of these in existence today, it’s very likely to be from that time and even more likely that it was handcrafted, so regardless of the truth; it wouldn’t change the rarity and beautiful quality hand work that it took to create this vintage accent wall mirror!! It’s 20inches wide by 30inches high, has a sturdy hand-welded, quality mount into an oak frame that’s got the metal scrollwork design wrapped over it. The brass/zinc alloy makes for absolutely stunning natural patina!! Naturally distressed, hand created, vintage with a touch of Victorian Gothic style… this is not only one of a kind, it’s one hell of a find!! My loss is your gain. See less
