A striking piece of authentic African ethnographic art, this vintage lidded clay vessel (Shekla) was originally acquired in Ethiopia and brought back to the US by a Peace Corps volunteer.
Handcrafted using traditional Ethiopian smoke-firing and hand-burnishing techniques, the vessel features a rich dark charcoal glaze that subtly shifts to expose warm terracotta undertones. Designed with classic rustic side lug handles and a fitted lid, its hand-molded asymmetry and 9-inch diameter give it a soulful, substantial presence. It serves as a great statement piece for open shelf curation, entryway consoles, or global-inspired interior styling.

Provenance & Cultural History:
Origin: Traditional hand-burnished black earthenware (Shekla) from Ethiopia.
History: Acquired directly in-country by a Peace Corps volunteer during their service.
Condition & Structural Notes:
Rim & Base: Exhibits minor fleabites/small surface chips along the lip rim and bottom base rim where the natural reddish terracotta clay body is exposed beneath the dark finish.
Surface Finish: Displays authentic firing variations, subtle hand-molding asymmetry, and faint surface handling marks from traditional pit-firing and age.
Lid & Interior: The lidded top rests flush against the side lugs. The interior features a natural matte/burnished clay finish.
