The armchair designed by Illum Wikkelsø for Niels Eilersen is a classic example of 1960s Danish design, where form and function are in perfect balance. Models of this type—with a high backrest and distinctly shaped armrests—are characteristic of Wikkelsø’s work, known for its organic, flowing lines and strong focus on comfort.
The frame is crafted from solid elm featuring a beautiful natural grain and warm tone. Particular attention is given to details—gently twisted, sculptural armrests and smooth transitions between elements are defining features of this design . These subtle refinements give the chair a light appearance despite its solid construction.
The wooden frame of the chair underwent a meticulous and professional restoration, involving the removal of old coatings, staining, and varnishing. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced carpenter with over 20 years of experience. The seat was reupholstered in a brown, textured fabric made from a blend of wool, cotton, and silk. Thanks to these treatments, the chair looks stunning and will serve its new owner for many years without fear of damage or wear and tear from everyday use.
Stylistically, it belongs to the mid-century modern and Scandinavian modern tradition. There are no unnecessary decorative elements—its aesthetic comes directly from its structure. The organic lines, ergonomic proportions, and open form allow it to fit seamlessly into both contemporary and more classic interiors.
In use, the chair reveals its true strength. The high backrest provides proper support, while the carefully shaped seat and armrests encourage a natural, relaxed sitting position.
Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) was part of the post-war Danish modern movement, trained as a cabinetmaker and designer. His work is known for its strong understanding of materials and organic forms inspired by nature . He collaborated with several leading manufacturers, including Eilersen.
