An impressive early floor vase by Scheurich Keramik, model 248-50, produced in West Germany during the 1950s. Standing just over 50 cm tall, this monumental vase combines a timeless ovoid silhouette with a richly textured lava-style glaze, representing the formative years of one of Germany's most influential ceramic manufacturers.

About the Manufacturer

Founded in 1954 in Kleinheubach, Bavaria, Scheurich Keramik quickly became one of the leading producers of West German decorative ceramics. During the postwar decades, the company developed a distinctive design language based on sculptural forms and innovative glazes, helping to establish West German Pottery as an internationally recognised design movement. Early export pieces from the 1950s are considerably less common than the company's later production and are increasingly appreciated by collectors.

Design

The generously proportioned ovoid body rises gracefully to a narrow neck, creating a balanced silhouette that feels both monumental and refined. The exterior is finished in a richly textured creamy yellow glaze with subtle tonal variation, producing a tactile surface that recalls weathered stone or volcanic rock. In contrast, the interior is glazed in a vivid yellow, providing an unexpected burst of colour that becomes visible when viewed from above. This interplay between restrained exterior and vibrant interior reflects the optimistic spirit of postwar European design while highlighting the exceptional quality of Scheurich's glazing techniques.
