Late 19th Century French Brass Haloed Christ Sunburst Plaque
Description
An evocative late 19th-century French brass devotional wall plaque depicting the haloed figure of Christ Blessing within an ornate radiant sunburst.
Christ is presented in finely embossed half-length relief with long flowing hair, a carefully modelled beard and a serene contemplative expression. His right hand is raised in the traditional gesture of benediction or spiritual teaching, while softly arranged classical drapery covers his shoulders and chest.
A clearly defined circular halo appears behind Christ’s head. Surrounding the central medallion is an impressive arrangement of graduated rays forming a radiant glory, traditionally known in French ecclesiastical art as a gloire rayonnante. The combination of halo and sunburst symbolises holiness, divine authority and heavenly illumination.
The plaque appears to have been embossed or pressed from comparatively thin brass rather than cast as a heavy solid-bronze sculpture. This workshop technique allowed decorative devotional objects to be produced for churches, convents, chapels and private Catholic interiors.
Its compact size gives it considerable versatility as an antique wall accent. The sculptural sunburst silhouette would complement a traditional European interior, collected gallery wall, library, private chapel, bedroom or layered maximalist scheme.
The brass preserves a richly aged surface with warm golden-brown tones, darkened oxidation and areas of natural turquoise-green verdigris. These historic surface variations enhance the detail of the hair, beard, drapery and radiating rays.
The plaque retains its original hanging loop and is ready for wall display.
The subject is properly identified as Christ Blessing rather than the Sacred Heart of Jesus. No flaming heart, crown of thorns or other specific Sacred Heart attributes appear within the composition.
No signature or manufacturer’s mark is visible. It is therefore catalogued as the work of an anonymous French ecclesiastical workshop of the late 19th century.
Reportedly originating from a convent in France and subsequently acquired from a private seller. The convent association was supplied at the time of acquisition, although no documentary record identifying the original religious institution accompanies the plaque.

The brass exhibits darkened patination, oxidation, rubbing, historic surface marks and areas of natural green verdigris. The verdigris is particularly visible around the face, hair, beard, drapery, recessed border, sunburst rays and reverse. The projecting rays display minor irregularities and historic edge wear. The original hanging loop remains present. The plaque has not been aggressively polished, allowing its aged surface and authentic character to remain visible. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. less
