Reported by previous owner to be over 400 years old, it carries the honest wear, patina, and history you simply cannot fake or reproduce.

The lid features a scalloped edge along the front lip, and the case is divided into raised fielded panels on the front, each outlined with a simple molded border. Wrought iron hardware — hand-forged hinges and hasp fittings — remains original to the piece. Inside, the lid is fitted with two wooden battens (stays) that once helped support the lid or secure interior compartments, and the case retains its original softwood lining, deeply darkened with age.

The chest shows genuine wormholing and surface degradation consistent with centuries of use and storage — most visible on the sides and base — along with old repairs, tool marks, and the rich, uneven coloration that only comes from true age. This is not a reproduction or "distressed" piece; it is a working antique with all the honest scars of a four-century life.
