Traditionally used for protection against heavy seasonal rains, such shields were crafted from lightweight, durable natural materials, allowing them to be carried comfortably during travel, hunting, and agricultural activities. This Naga rain is constructed from interwoven cane and fiber, and is beautifully aged, with deep brown tones and a richly developed patina, to attest to its age and use. Mounted on a custom iron stand, the shield is presented as a sculptural work of tribal art and embodies the ingenuity and material traditions of the Naga peoples of Northeast India. See less
