Beautifully executed in finely cast gilt bronze and lavishly decorated with vibrant champlevé enamel, this remarkable object perfectly embodies the elegance, balance, and superb craftsmanship associated with the Napoleonic era. Immediately captivating is its extraordinarily architectural silhouette. Unlike the vast majority of surviving French hand mirrors, this example features a striking stepped frame with elegantly rounded upper corners, creating a timeless and sophisticated profile. The long, gracefully tapering handle enhances its sculptural appearance, transforming it from a simple vanity accessory into a genuine work of decorative art. The quality of execution is exceptional throughout. Rich cobalt blue, pale blue, black, emerald green and delicate pink enamels are individually recessed into the bronze using the ancient champlevé enameling technique, before being kiln-fired and meticulously finished by hand. The fine gilded outlines, floral ornamentation and geometric motifs display remarkable precision and reflect the work of an accomplished French enameller working at the highest level of decorative arts during the early nineteenth century. A particularly desirable and seldom encountered detail is that the reverse side of the handle is also completely decorated with enamel, demonstrating that no compromise was made in its production. This level of refinement was reserved for luxury objects intended to be admired from every angle, even when not in use. Measuring 23 cm (9.06 in.) in height, the mirror possesses beautifully balanced proportions. It sits comfortably in the hand while elegantly framing the face, making each use feel remarkably luxurious. Whether displayed on a dressing table or enjoyed as originally intended, it remains a fascinating and highly decorative object. The original mirror plate has survived remarkably well and retains its historic character. Considering that this mirror is over two centuries old, the overall condition is exceptionally good. Naturally, there are a few very minor enamel losses and age-related signs of wear, all entirely consistent with its age and serving as authentic testimony to its remarkable history. One of the original retaining screws is missing. This has been deliberately left unreplaced in order to preserve the complete authenticity and originality of the mirror. The threaded opening measures approximately 1–2 mm, allowing a suitable replacement screw to be fitted easily by a future owner should this ever be desired. Examples of this particular model are exceptionally scarce. Mirrors of comparable quality, craftsmanship and design seldom appear on the international art market, making this an outstanding acquisition for collectors of French Empire decorative arts, fine enamels and important luxury objects. Its elegant combination of gilded bronze, brilliant enamel colours and refined architectural lines allows this mirror to integrate effortlessly into a wide variety of interiors. Whether placed within a classical residence, a French château, an Art Deco apartment, a Hollywood Regency setting or a contemporary luxury interior, it immediately becomes a sophisticated focal point. More than simply a decorative object, this mirror offers the pleasure of daily use. Its beautifully proportioned frame gently surrounds the face, creating an intimate and elegant viewing experience while reminding its owner each day of the extraordinary artistry achieved by French craftsmen during the Empire period. A museum-quality object that combines rarity, exceptional craftsmanship, remarkable originality and timeless beauty. ⸻ Condition Very good antique condition considering its age of more than 200 years. Minor enamel losses and gentle wear consistent with age. The original mirror plate remains in remarkably good condition. One original retaining screw is missing; the corresponding threaded opening (approximately 1–2 mm) allows a replacement screw to be fitted if desired. It has intentionally been left untouched to preserve the mirror’s originality and historical authenticity. ⸻ Materials * Gilt bronze * Champlevé enamel * Original mirror glass ⸻ Origin France ⸻ Period Empire Period (Napoleon I) ⸻ Date Circa 1805–1815 ⸻ Dimensions * Height: 23 cm (9.06 in.) * Width: 8.8 cm (3.46 in.) * Depth: approx. 1 cm (0.39 in.)
