A charming and increasingly uncommon suite of four original antique hand-colored architectural engravings depicting some of the most celebrated landmarks of historic Bath, England. Drawn by renowned British topographical artist Thomas Hosmer Shepherd (1792–1864) and engraved by J. B. Allen, these beautifully detailed views date to the early nineteenth century and capture the elegance of Regency-era Bath with remarkable architectural precision.
The set includes:
* Entrance to Bath, From South Side of the Bridge
* Lansdown Tower, Lansdown Hill, Near Bath
* Lansdown Crescent, Bath
* Part of Queen Square, Bath
Thomas H. Shepherd is considered one of England’s foremost architectural illustrators. His meticulously rendered city views documented many of Britain’s most important buildings and streetscapes during the first half of the nineteenth century and remain highly regarded by collectors for both their artistic quality and historical significance.
Each engraving retains its original hand coloring and is housed in its original vintage Newcomb-Macklin frame. Founded in Chicago in 1883, Newcomb-Macklin became one of America’s premier custom frame makers, supplying museum-quality frames for galleries, collectors, and institutions throughout the twentieth century. Today, Newcomb-Macklin frames are appreciated by collectors in their own right and are frequently found surrounding important American and European works of art.
Complete matching suites of early English architectural engravings are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Displayed together, these works create an elegant gallery wall celebrating the refined Georgian architecture that made Bath one of England’s most celebrated cities.
Whether displayed in a symmetrical grid, flanking a fireplace, or incorporated into a layered gallery wall, this elegant suite brings nearly two centuries of English architectural history and timeless sophistication to any interior. (Particularly English Country, Georgian, Federal, Traditional, Ralph Lauren-inspired, and collected eclectic.)
