Signed lower right, 'Rafael Navarro B' for Rafael Navarro Barajas (Mexican, 1921-1992), titled, 'Roma' and dated 1956.
A member of the 20th-century Mexican School of Painting, Rafael Navarro Barajas was born in Tonala, Jalisco and first studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos (1943-1946). From 1953 he exhibited widely and with success, first at the Galería de Arte Mexicano when it was under the stewardship of gallerist Inés Amor, and then throughout Mexico, Europe and America including in Deauville (1954), Paris (1955), Madrid (1955), Rome (1969), Texas (1969), and New York. He exhibited alongside major Modernists including Frida Kahlo, Lilia Carrillo, and Manuel Felguérez. Navarro was the recipient of prizes, scholarships and awards from France, the University of Mexico, UNESCO, and the Ibero-American Institute of Cultural Relations which allowed him to study in France, Spain and Italy.
