This dynamic composition features a series of nude male figures interwoven with panthers and lush tropical foliage, rendered in strong yet fluid graphite lines. Hentschel’s study reveals both his mastery of anatomy and his interest in stylized, rhythmic design, echoing the Art Deco sensibility and decorative modernism of the period. A noted designer, painter, and educator, Hentschel was a central figure in Louisville’s art scene and served as a longtime instructor at the University of Louisville. His works often bridged fine art and design, integrating figuration with ornamental abstraction. This drawing embodies his approach, balancing academic draftsmanship with imaginative, decorative flourish. From a private collection; purchased from Duke Gallery in 1997. Dimensions: 28”h x 33.5”w x 1.5”d (framed). In good vintage condition with slight tear on edge (see photo for reference). See less
