A Japanese celadon (seiji) plate featuring a scalloped, rolled foliate rim and a contrasting white relief centerpiece. This centerpiece depicts a horned beast (probably a kirin) with a detailed mane and tail, looking backward over its shoulder.
The plate was glazed in a thick and unctuous celadon glaze. You can see the potter's wheel marks under the thick white glaze used on the base. The foot is rounded and unglazed. The clay used is white and refined.
MEASUREMENTS
6 1/8 in (15.6 cm) diameter x 1 in (2.5 cm) deep. Weighs 12.2 oz.
CONDITION
There is a small glaze hairline on the rim that does not fully penetrate the glaze. There are no breaks, cracks, chips, or repairs. There is slight wear to the surface. There are kiln flaws, such as black spots, pimples, and glaze separations.
An elegant example of Japanese celadon craftsmanship, this distinctive plate is a beautiful addition to any collection of Asian ceramics or refined decorative arts.
