Framed print titled "19th Century/SG" by local artist Herbert Simon. Dates to 2016.
Signed in the lower left corner. Frame measures 18"H x 35"W. From the Herbert Simon
estate collection.
From The Herbert Simon Studio Archive, this fascinating and rare framed triptych titled "19th Century/SG" features three progressive original etching proofs created by artist Herbert Simon in 2016. Presented side-by-side in a sleek, contemporary silver gallery frame, this piece offers a captivating look into the master printmaker's evolving creative process. The triptych displays three distinct "states" pulled from the same hand-etched plate: Left (2nd State): A crisp, architectural rendering of a historic 19th-century manor house positioned atop a grand stone staircase, surrounded by bare winter trees. Middle (4th State): A deeper, dramatic state where dark tonal aquatint or soft-ground work vignettes the house into a bright, central spotlight. Right (5th State): The final, surrealist evolution where a prominent, graphic silhouette of a human hand is superimposed directly over the scene. Each individual print features Simon's etched circular "HS" studio monogram in the lower left corner of the plate. Below the platemark, each is individually hand-signed and annotated in graphite by the artist, detailing the title, state progress (2nd State, 4th State, 5th State), and the date (H Simon 2016).
About The Herbert Simon Studio Archive: This piece belongs to an exclusive,
single-provenance acquisition sourced directly from the private estate and studio archive of celebrated American sculptor and university professor Herbert Simon (1927–2017). A student of abstract expressionist titans Hans Hofmann, Robert Motherwell, and Philip Guston, Simon served as a professor at Wilkes University for over 20 years, where his work bridged the gap between the New York School and academic structuralism. His monumental public commissions are permanently installed at major regional landmarks, including the 'Facets' aluminum installation at Wilkes University, the 'Aloft' sculpture at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, and civic plazas across Pennsylvania. Spanning over fifty years of creative evolution, this collection represents a rare opportunity to acquire investment-grade art with institutional provenance.
