A nice French art deco piano or desk lamp in nickel plated solid brass or bronze made around 1930. The shade partly done in pressed brass is signed Monix Paris.
"Monix" was the brand of Maxime Lokiec (1888-1940). Les Etablissements Lokiec was a Paris based company (38-40 rue de la Folie Méricourt). Almost nothing is known about this lighting manufactory. Here the little I learned searching the public archives and my Monix catalogs. Maxime Lokiec, from Jewish Polish origin, in the mid 30s changed his name into 'Loquet'. He started his company in bronze lighting devices around 1920. The company closed its doors in 1980. In 1922 a patent was registered for a spring braked ball joint which is used in most Monix models. After the war the company re-opened and modernized (higher volumes, cheaper made lamps) and made modernist lamps in pressed brass in a rather impersonal style.
The lamp is about 30 cm (11,81") high in its highest position. And the shade is 10,43 inches long. The heavy base has a diameter of about 5,9 inches. The bronze base has a cast iron inlay covered by a round metal plate covered with green felt. The finely detailed bronze is nickel plated. The original plating is in very good condition given its age. The shade in pressed brass shows some small dents. I cleaned the lamp and it comes wired with new cloth covered twisted cord. I placed an American candelabra base socket and US 2-prong plug. The lamp is represented in the 1930 Lokiec catalog.
