Capon frères & Jean Gauthier
A beautiful pair of French art deco wall sconces made around 1930-1935 in nickel plated solid brass or bronze. They were designed by Capon frères. And hold large cups in opalescent molded-pressed semi-crystal. With beautiful tones of milky blue or warm amber depending whether light falls on or shines through them.
Would you demount the fixtures you would find that the small cups that hide the sockets are signed Capon. For the company of the two brothers Georges and Eugène Capon in Paris (40 rue de l'Assomption). Georges was a silversmith and Eugène ciseleur (engraver). Alongside vases and other items they also made a small line of chandeliers table lamps and wall sconces. Displayed amongst the best designers of the era they were very successful at the 1925 Art Décorative exhibit in Paris (see catalog picture). Nowadays Capon art deco fixtures make high prices at auction houses.
The wall sconces hold opalescent cups made by Jean Gauthier (Ezan). This model shade is well-known with a 'Frontisi' signature. Frontisi was a shop selling glass shades for lighting as well as complete lighting fixture. The Frontisi signed ones were made by Gauthier for this shop. But Etablissement Jean Gauthier sold this model to other lighting firms as well. And those have the obscure initials RF-MD. It is unknown where these marks refer to.
The sconces are 21 cm (8,27 inches) high and project 35 cm (13,78") from the wall. The shades have a diameter of 26 cm (10,23"). And the nice wall-plates measure 13,5 x 13,5 cm. The wall lights are in excellent condition. I re-nickeled and patinated the mounts. And rewired them with American candelabra base sockets.

EZAN - Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first world war Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in molded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J.Robert pseudonym for J. Gauthier based on the street name of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades sometimes done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant
