Signed lower left "Monnard," this luminous oil on canvas is an exceptional example of Maurice Monnard's interpretation of the French Impressionist landscape tradition. Painted in the second half of the twentieth century, the composition evokes the quiet poetry of the French countryside, depicting two figures resting beneath a mature tree amid a flowering meadow overlooking a narrow stream. Beyond the water, a pair of small cottages nestle into a softly diffused woodland, their forms dissolving into a shimmering atmosphere.

Monnard painted in an unmistakably Impressionist vocabulary while interpreting it through a contemporary twentieth-century sensibility. Rather than carefully describing every leaf or flower, he constructs the landscape through thousands of broken, painterly strokes of color.
