An elegant bronze elephant table lamp by Maitland-Smith, masterfully modeled after an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) and raised on a substantial beveled serpentine marble base. Celebrated for their heirloom-quality decorative objects, Maitland-Smith combined traditional craftsmanship with refined materials, and this sculptural lamp is an excellent example of the firm's work from the late twentieth century.

The elephant is depicted wearing a richly detailed ceremonial caparison, inspired by the ornate blankets draped over royal and temple elephants of India and Southeast Asia. A Greek key border frames the saddle cloth, while finely cast tassel fringe adds texture and movement. The realistically rendered hide displays deeply modeled wrinkles, expressive ears, gracefully curved tusks, and an uplifted trunk—a traditional symbol of prosperity, wisdom, protection, and good fortune.

The bronze retains a warm, dark brown patina with subtle verdigris highlights that accentuate the sculptural detail and lend depth to the surface. The figure stands upon a beautifully figured green serpentine marble base with natural burgundy and cream veining, creating a striking contrast between the polished stone and richly patinated bronze. The lamp has been professionally rewired with a new brass three-way socket and is ready for immediate use.
