A striking and architecturally scaled pair of American neoclassical revival lamps by Warren Kessler, New York, executed in the manner of 18th-century English Wedgwood black basalt wares and French Louis XVI decorative arts. Produced circa 1960s, the lamps combine archaeological restraint with the refined glamour associated with high-style New York interiors of the mid-20th century.

Each lamp is centered by an urn-form body in a matte black “basalt” finish, richly ornamented with classical oval portrait medallions, ram’s-head masks, tied ribbon swags, floral garlands, and stylized leaf borders. The decoration draws directly from ancient Roman and Etruscan prototypes popularized by Josiah Wedgwood during the late 18th century, while the gilt plinth bases introduce a distinctly French Louis XVI and Maison Jansen-inspired sensibility.

The scale is particularly impressive. At 33 inches high to the finials, these lamps possess the visual authority of true garniture urns rather than conventional table lighting. The dramatic urn bodies alone measure approximately 18 inches high, creating a sculptural silhouette equally suited to formal interiors, library consoles, or flanking a monumental sideboard or commode.

Both lamps retain their original Warren Kessler, New York labels on the double-cluster socket assemblies. The substantial dual sockets were intended to support oversized custom shades and provide generous illumination in sophisticated interiors of the period. The laurel wreath finials and warm gilt bases create a refined contrast against the matte black surfaces, further emphasizing their neoclassical character.

Executed with unusually crisp molded relief decoration and disciplined proportions, the pair reflects the enduring fascination with Grand Tour classicism that influenced luxury American interiors throughout the mid-century period. They sit comfortably alongside interiors by Maison Jansen, Karl Springer, and other designers who favored dramatic black-and-gilt contrasts with historical references.

An elegant and highly decorative pair of lamps combining classical form, sculptural presence, and timeless sophistication.
