Diminutive Jacques Adnet, Attributed -Sunburst Fire Screen, with Marble Base, France, c. 1950
France, circa 1950s–1960s
A striking French mid-century sunburst fire screen attributed to Jacques Adnet, School of Jacques Adnet, combining neoclassical symbolism with the sculptural geometry of postwar French modern design. Dramatically scaled despite its diminutive footprint, the piece features a circular mesh center enveloped by an explosive arrangement of elongated radiating rays, each terminating in a subtle spherical finial.
Constructed in patinated iron with brass accents, the screen embodies the sophisticated interplay of materials and architectural forms associated with French decorative arts of the 1950s and 1960s. The layered dimensional rays project outward with strong sculptural presence, evoking both the sunburst motifs favored by Adnet and the atomic-age forms that became emblematic of the era’s luxury interiors. The circular center is fitted with a fine metal mesh panel framed by a rounded brass surround, creating an elegant visual contrast between sharp geometry and softened curves.
The screen is mounted to a black marble and iron plinth base, lending the piece a grounded architectural quality while enhancing its presentation as a standalone decorative object. Though originally conceived as a fireside accessory, the work transcends utility and functions equally well as a sculptural tabletop object, mantel decoration, or modernist accent in Hollywood Regency, neoclassical, or sophisticated contemporary interiors.
Its compact scale makes it particularly versatile, while the dramatic silhouette allows it to command visual attention well beyond its size. A refined and unusual example of French decorative ironwork that blurs the boundary between functional design and modern sculpture.
