A compelling example of nineteenth-century French sporting art, this large oil on canvas board is signed lower left by Henri Douzil (1837–1891), a respected French painter whose work bridges the traditions of academic realism and the rich visual culture of provincial France. Though less widely known today than many of his Salon contemporaries, Douzil exhibited at the prestigious Paris Salon during the second half of the nineteenth century and developed a reputation for portraits, genre scenes, landscapes, and carefully observed still lifes. Born in Nîmes, he remained deeply connected to the landscapes and rural customs of southern France, where hunting traditions and country life provided enduring artistic inspiration.
