Regency English Sheffield Plate Armorial Wine Cooler in the Manner of Matthew Boulton
A distinguished English Old Sheffield Plate wine cooler dating to the Regency period, circa 1810–1825, executed in the neoclassical taste associated with the workshops of Sheffield and Birmingham and strongly reminiscent of the elegant table wares produced by Matthew Boulton and his contemporaries.
The vessel is of sophisticated architectural form, featuring a broad reeded collar above a cylindrical body that transitions into a deeply lobed lower bowl, all raised upon a stepped circular pedestal foot. The cooler is fitted with finely cast handles terminating in stylized dolphin or sea-serpent heads, motifs long associated with maritime prosperity, safe passage, and Britain's naval power during the Georgian era.
Engraved to the front is a handsome armorial achievement surmounted by a canine crest and accompanied by the French motto "La Vertue Surmonte Tout Obstacle" ("Virtue Overcomes Every Obstacle"), a reflection of the heraldic traditions embraced by many British and Scottish families during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
Of particular interest is the cooler's ingenious three-part construction. Designed with a removable liner and ice reservoir, it allowed wine or champagne bottles to remain chilled while preventing direct contact with meltwater. Such practical refinement was a hallmark of the finest Sheffield plate produced for country houses, clubs, and grand urban residences.
The restrained classical ornament, beautifully proportioned silhouette, crisp reeded borders, and sculptural handles embody the refined elegance of the Regency dining table. Equally suited today as a wine cooler, champagne bucket, cachepot, or centerpiece, this impressive vessel remains a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of England's celebrated Sheffield and Birmingham plating industry.
