A striking pair of monumental postmodern table lamps by Casual Lamps, dated 1986, embodying the architectural aesthetic and sculptural sophistication that defined luxury American interiors during the 1980s. Executed in white lacquered plaster and raised on substantial clear lucite plinth bases, the lamps possess a commanding presence while maintaining a clean and refined visual profile.
The bodies are conceived as abstract stele or shield forms, their silhouettes softened by rounded lower corners and crowned by a stylized pediment-like crest. The design reflects the influence of Postmodern architecture, where classical motifs were reimagined through bold geometry and simplified forms. The result is both architectural and sculptural, functioning equally as decorative objects and lighting.
Particularly noteworthy is the richly textured surface treatment. The bodies are decorated with thousands of finely incised diagonal striations, creating a raked or combed plaster effect that recalls hand-carved limestone, architectural stucco, and chiseled stone relief.
