European Modernist Spring Still Life with Daffodils and Tulips, Signed "PS '41," Oil on Canvas
Estate of John Loring, design director of Tiffany & Co from 1979 to 1984/2009
European Modernist Spring Still Life with Daffodils and Tulips, Signed "PS '41," Oil on Canvas. This charming mid-century European floral still life captures the quiet beauty of an informal spring bouquet arranged in a luminous silver pitcher. Signed lower left "PS '41," the painting is believed to date from 1941 and reflects the restrained elegance associated with Scandinavian and Northern European modern painting of the period, although the precise artist remains unidentified.
Executed in oil on canvas, the composition balances vivid color with understated sophistication. Brilliant yellow daffodils (Narcissus) bloom alongside crimson, pink, and pale yellow tulips, their elongated stems and cascading foliage creating a lively, asymmetrical arrangement. The flowers emerge from a softly modeled silver pitcher whose reflective surface is rendered with confident passages of cool gray, cream, and blue. Behind the bouquet, layered strokes of turquoise, celadon, and blue-green establish a tranquil atmosphere while allowing the saturated floral colors to command the composition.
The painting demonstrates an accomplished understanding of color harmony and painterly structure. Broad, deliberate brushstrokes remain visible throughout, giving the work freshness and immediacy while maintaining a carefully balanced composition. Its aesthetic recalls aspects of Scandinavian modernism and Post-Impressionist floral painting, particularly the domestic still lifes of Danish and Swedish painters working during the first half of the twentieth century.
Presented in an attractive carved silver-leaf frame that complements the cool palette, the work comes from the Estate of John Loring, celebrated design director of Tiffany & Co. and noted collector of fine and decorative arts.
