Pair of Aesthetic Movement Cast Iron Garden Tabourets, Possibly J.W. Fiske, American, Circa 1870–1890
An exceptional pair of late nineteenth-century cast iron garden tabourets embodying the naturalistic design aesthetic that flourished during the Victorian era. Possibly produced by the celebrated New York foundry J.W. Fiske, these sculptural works combine mythological imagery with organic forms, creating decorative objects of remarkable character and versatility.
Each tabouret features a slightly concave, finely pierced circular top measuring 12.5 inches in diameter, cast with an elegant pattern of quatrefoils and geometric ornament. The tops are supported by three stylized griffin-form caryatids, their expressive heads emerging beneath the tabletop before transitioning into naturalistic branch-form legs. The supports terminate in boldly modeled paw feet, reinforcing the protective and guardian symbolism traditionally associated with griffins. Throughout history, griffins have represented vigilance, strength, and the safeguarding of treasured possessions, making them a particularly appropriate motif for decorative furnishings of distinction.
The branch-form legs are richly textured to resemble weathered tree limbs, reflecting the Victorian fascination with nature and the artistic movement's embrace of organic design. Constructed in multiple cast sections joined by bolts, the tabourets exhibit the quality and durability associated with America's leading ornamental iron foundries of the late nineteenth century.
Equally suitable as garden tabourets, plant stands, or decorative pedestals, these versatile forms also lend themselves beautifully to use as occasional tables. One can add glass tops, and they become elegant drinks tables ideal for a living room, sunroom, conservatory, or covered terrace.
A sculptural and highly decorative pair that exemplifies the artistry of Victorian cast iron design.
