Pair of Monumental Vetri Murano Spiral Ribbed Egg Lamps, Italy, Circa 1980s
A striking pair of monumental Murano glass egg-form lamps, handblown in Italy during the 1980s and executed in luminous white lattimo glass with dramatic spiral ribbed decoration. Standing an impressive 23 inches high and 16 inches in diameter, these sculptural works blur the line between lighting and glass art, serving equally well as illuminated objects and decorative statements.
The elegant ovoid forms are distinguished by a continuous spiraling pattern known in Murano glassmaking as coste ritorte (twisted ribs). Created while the glass remained molten, the ribbed surface was carefully twisted to produce a dynamic helical movement that wraps around each form from base to apex. This technique creates remarkable visual depth and transforms dramatically when illuminated, as light is refracted through the alternating raised and recessed surfaces.
Executed in opaque white lattimo glass, a material developed on Murano to emulate the appearance of fine porcelain, the lamps emit a warm, even glow while highlighting the craftsmanship of the ribbed decoration. The swirling pattern evokes natural forms such as shells, seeds, and celestial bodies, reflecting the organic modern design sensibilities popular among Italian designers of the late twentieth century.
Their substantial scale and sculptural presence make them particularly versatile, functioning as dramatic floor lamps, oversized table lamps, or illuminated architectural accents. Whether displayed in a modernist, contemporary, or eclectic interior, they command attention both illuminated and unlit.
A superb pair of handblown Murano glass lamps showcasing the enduring artistry of Venetian glassmaking and the innovative decorative techniques for which Murano remains internationally celebrated.
