Chinese Scholar's Carved Hongmu Hardwood Qilin Paperweight, Possibly Zitan, Qing
Estate of John Loring of Tiffanys
An exceptional Chinese scholar's desk paperweight (zhenzhi), finely hand-carved from dense hongmu hardwood, possibly zitan or a zitan-type rosewood, dating to the late Qing Dynasty or early Republic period, circa 1880–1920. Sculptural in both form and execution, this substantial example reflects the refined taste associated with the traditional Chinese scholar's studio, where functional objects were elevated into works of art.
Raised upon a rectangular hardwood base measuring 11.25 inches wide by 2.75 inches deep by 2 inches high, the applied high-relief carving measures 7.5 inches in width and depicts a pair of confronted qilin, China's revered mythical guardians. Elegantly intertwined amid scrolling cloud forms, the creatures are rendered with expressive faces, powerful feline bodies, curling tails, and stylized flaming pearl motifs that animate the composition with remarkable movement. The deeply undercut carving and softly polished contours demonstrate the skill of an accomplished artisan working in an exceptionally dense hardwood.
Unlike the more ferocious guardian lion, the qilin is regarded as one of the most benevolent creatures in Chinese mythology, symbolizing wisdom, prosperity, protection, longevity, and the arrival of distinguished descendants. Within the scholar's studio, these auspicious guardians served as reminders of moral virtue, intellectual achievement, and harmonious governance. Paperweights such as this secured delicate sheets of xuan paper during calligraphy and painting while simultaneously expressing the owner's education, taste, and appreciation for fine craftsmanship.
The rich reddish-brown timber displays a beautiful natural luster and subtle dark figuring characteristic of premium hongmu hardwood, possibly zitan or a closely related zitan-type rosewood, materials long prized for their remarkable density, durability, and luxurious appearance.
Adding to its desirability, this paperweight comes from the estate of John Loring, celebrated design director of Tiffany & Co. from 1979 to 2009, whose influential career helped shape one of America's most iconic luxury houses. Objects from his personal collection are appreciated not only for their quality but also for their distinguished provenance and discerning eye for exceptional design.
