Judging from the construction … Read more This is a white porcelain jar from the Joseon (Korean) dynasty, made on the Korean Peninsula. Judging from the construction of its mouth and its overall form, it is thought to have been fired in the early Joseon period, around the 15th to 16th century. However, the item is registered with an estimated date spanning the entire Joseon Dynasty period (15th to 19th centuries).
It is an excavated piece that spent long years buried in the earth, and this is one such jar that was unearthed.

Joseon ceramics are known for a simplicity that strips away ornamentation and for a generous, unpretentious form that lets you feel the touch of the maker's hand. This quiet beauty, free of any show, has captivated collectors around the world. This jar embodies exactly that appeal. Its body swells most fully at the center and tapers toward the top and bottom, forming what is called an "abacus-bead shape," which is one of the characteristic forms of Joseon ceramics. In addition, the mouth rim opens slightly and sharply outward, another point of interest, and this construction of the mouth clearly reflects the style of the early Joseon period.

The glazed white porcelain surface is not a pure white but rich in variation, ranging from a soft white to areas with a faint bluish tint, with pools of glaze and crazing visible here and there. On the body, shaped on a hand-turned wheel, gentle throwing lines remain, and within its overall balance one can sense the warmth and subtle irregularity unique to handwork. Though it is not flashy, it is a piece of serene presence whose charm deepens the more you look at it.

Regarding its condition: we actually filled it with water and left it for about two days, and there was no leakage. There are about four spots at the tip of the mouth where small chips have been repaired, but each has been skillfully mended and is not noticeable to the eye. There is no other conspicuous damage, and despite being an excavated piece it is in relatively good condition, retaining its beautiful appearance. It can be fully enjoyed as an item for appreciation. A wooden storage box is also included.

Used as a single-flower vase, arranging a single seasonal flower or branch will bring out the beauty of this simple white porcelain all the more. It suits a Japanese-style space, of course, and paired with concrete or a minimalist modern interior it holds a quiet and dignified presence.
