A pair of large art deco wall sconces made in France around 1930. Nickel plated bronze or solid brass mounts hold shades in clear frosted molded-pressed glass, made by Verreries de Bagneaux.
Both shades are signed SEVB on the rim. Which is important because in the 90s re-editions of this model were made in high volumes by the modern glass factory Vianne. We now often see these worthless and unsigned re-editions being offered by antique dealers as old. The Vianne ones are unsigned. Have no hand polished glossy highlights and are mat on the inside of the shades as well. The old 1930 originals are always signed Sevb and not that easy to get by.
SEVB is short for "Société d'Exploitation des Verreries de Bagneaux". A small glass factory from the 20s in the village of Bagneaux a little south of Paris. Mid 30s, after the death of Leopold Appert in 1931, Sevb merged with Appert frères and became the Société d'exploitation des verreries de Bagneaux et Appert frères réunies , that's why also the signature SEVBA can be found on several model bowls and lamp shades.
The sconces are 11,8 inches high 10,4 inches wide and project 5,12 inches from the wall. They are in very good condition. I have re-nickeled and patinated the fixtures. The lamps come rewired. I placed American candelabra base sockets.
