The base of … Read more An absolutely charming mid to late 1900s antique German or Austrian blanket chest with the original paint. The base of the blanket chest is painted a deep teal blue which is offset by reddish brown panels decorated with yellowand white flowers and green stems, framed with white banding. The chest is painted on three sides with the back left natural, which is customary. The top bears remnants of old blue paint in spots but is largely natural wood.
The storage portion sits atop painted blue bun feet. Note the dovetail construction at the corners. The chest still has the old ironwork locking mechanism on the interior but it has been disabled as there is no key. Old iron hinges and key escutcheon are present. The interior candlebox serves as storage as well as a prop for the lid when opened.
This blanket chest would be perfect at the foot of a bed for storage or as a coffee table!

Condition commensurate with age and use. This is a rustic old European piece so it has old scrapes, gouges, rings (top), inactive wormhole damage... see photos. The trunk is strong and sturdy, ready for many years of use and enjoyment. The paint is original. The waxed finish will just get better with age and use... buff with an old tshirt or soft buffing brush to increase the shine!
