Set of three chromolithograph plates from W.J. Gordon's "Our Country's Flowers and How to Know Them," illustrated by John Allen (Day & Son / Simpkin, Marshall, London; 1st ed. 1891). Each sheet packs dozens of small numbered British wildflowers into the dense, tapestry-like composite style typical of late-Victorian field guides.
Plate 11 is a study of hedgerow umbellifers – creamy and yellow flower-heads with a red burnet ball and clusters of dark berries. Plate 4 is the brightest of the three, built around an orange wallflower with yellow mustards and rockets and deep-purple violets. Plate 28 turns to the sedges and rushes, tall grassy heads in straw, russet and green with a single pink round head at center.
Original antique chromolithographs – not reproductions. Sold as a set of three. Sheets measure 7.5 x 5.25 in.
