Beautifully modeled in solid 84 standard silver, this charming miniature captures the playful character and expressive personality that distinguish Rappoport's finest animal studies. Unlike the strict naturalism often associated with Fabergé's animal sculptures, Rappoport's figures are admired for their subtle humor, lively presence, and gently caricatured charm.

The hippopotamus bears crisp St. Petersburg hallmarks, including the Greek letter alpha (α), the 84 silver standard, the female head assay mark facing right, and the maker's mark "I.P." for Julius Rappoport. Despite measuring only 20 mm (0.79 inches) in length, the figure has remarkable substance, weighing 17.5 grams. Two finely set ruby cabochon eyes provide an elegant accent and bring the animal vividly to life.

Julius Rappoport was among the most accomplished Russian master silversmiths of the late Imperial period. Working from his own St. Petersburg workshop, he created silver objects both independently and for the House of Fabergé. Today his animal sculptures are prized by collectors for their exceptional craftsmanship, expressive modeling, and enduring charm. Examples of his work are preserved in major museum collections, including the Kremlin Armory and the Hermitage Museum.
