An exceptional piece of art by world-renowned avant-garde artist Karel Appel. A founding member of the influential CoBrA movement, Appel’s signature style is defined by a primitive, childlike spontaneity, thick expressive outlines, and a bold, saturated color palette. This striking 1969 lithograph beautifully captures his celebrated abstract-expressionist approach to animal subjects, making it a highly desirable piece for collectors of 20th-century modern art.
Signed 106/110.
Appel's early works were heavily influenced by Picasso, Matisse, and Jean Dubuffet. However, he soon developed a unique style characterized by bold colors, dynamic brushstrokes, and a raw, almost primal, energy. In 1948, he co-founded the COBRA movement (an acronym for Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam) along with other avant-garde artists like Asger Jorn and Constant Nieuwenhuys. This group rejected traditional aesthetics and embraced spontaneity, experimentation, and a childlike sense of wonder in their art.
