It was crafted primarily with couching embroidery techniques using metallic threads. It represents a fierce character or protector deity. If Chinese, in traditional Chinese performing arts and folklore, a face decorated with intense bulging eyes, swirling thick eyebrows and an imposing metallic beard signifies a powerful warrior, general, or protective deity such as a guardian king or a judge of the underworld. The fierce expression is not meant to be evil. Instead, it serves as a form of cosmic protection to ward off negative spirits, bring good fortune, and display righteousness. As such, it was traditionally used in theatrical performances, local opera traditions, or as an auspicious festive decorative hanging.
