This exceptional piece … Read more This cohesive, honest and highly authentic walnut American Federal (Hepplewhite-style) country work stand was hand-crafted circa 1810-1830. This exceptional piece remains in a rare state of historical preservation.

Built by local cabinetmakers from solid native American black walnut, utilizing square-cut nails and a saw that produced straight, parallel tool marks on the underside of the drawer, consistent with saws of this period. The drawer sides, bottom and underside framing are likely eastern white pine or poplar.

The slender, square legs that narrow significantly at the bottom are a defining hallmark of the Hepplewhite and Federal (early Republic) period design. The flat top with a slight overhang is typical of tables used in parlors or bedrooms for sewing and writing. To further authenticate this piece, there is historic ink residue inside the drawer.

The drawer has classic hand-cut dovetail joints, and classic turned wood knobs, and are likely original, as there is no sign of replacement. This lovely piece also has its original undisturbed surface texture and finish!
