Artist Biography
Born in Speicher, Switzerland, in 1886, Conrad Buff immigrated to the United States in 1905 before settling permanently in Los Angeles two years later. Although largely self-taught, he developed into one of California's most celebrated modern landscape painters.

His early employment as a commercial painter profoundly influenced his artistic vocabulary, encouraging the broad, confident application of flat color and simplified structural forms that would later define his mature style.

Buff spent decades traveling throughout California, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico, producing paintings that transformed the American Southwest into bold, almost architectural compositions. His close friendship with renowned landscape painter Edgar Payne led to numerous sketching expeditions and collaborations on large-scale mural commissions during the WPA era.

Working alongside his wife, illustrator Mary Marsh Buff, he also achieved national recognition as an illustrator of children's books, several of which received prestigious Newbery Honor distinctions.

Today Conrad Buff is regarded as one of the foremost interpreters of the Western American landscape. His paintings occupy an important position between California Impressionism and Modernism, combining direct observation with increasingly geometric abstraction.
