This restored American Empire work or side table features a flame/crotch mahogany top, with two rounded, dovetailed drawers and turned wood knobs, above a turned baluster center column support, ending in carved lion's paw feet and accent trim.
The underside of the drawer bottoms show saw marks and a chamfered drawer edge, common before 1840. The screws appear similar to those used from 1820-1850, or... due to the slight point, maybe after 1846/1856.
One piece of trim over one foot was re-glued, as was the table top (previously loose veneer was stabilized and the missing veneer was patched or filled w/hard wax), the drawer bottoms were re-glued and the drawers received a coat of Feed-N-Wax, and the finished wood was french polished ~ yes, it is shiny and if you prefer to knock down the sheen, just use a grey Scotch Brite pad (!).

The top is wonderfully uneven upon close inspection, with some earlier and some recent repairs made to the separations in the flame/crotch mahogany veneer; there are two small dents in the top near the front right corner. The drawers function fine. A previous owner added nails to a few of the drawer dovetails (not my error). Overall the piece is very sturdy as the center support was also separated from and re-glued where it meets the lower square section of the base. There is a small area of missing wood or a minor chip on the right side panel (near the top of the side). A crack is visible in the base (see the underside shot) however it is stable; not moving. The finials were apparently lost; you may be able to find some suitable replacements. The entire piece was french polished and the finish is overall in very good condition. less
