Executed in glazed ceramic, the vessel takes the form of a stylised dove with elegantly simplified lines, reflecting the optimistic organic forms that characterised post-war British design. The sculptural body is finished in a soft ivory glaze, while the gently raised wings create a discreet opening designed to hold a small posy of flowers. Delicate relief cross motifs decorate the wings, a recurring decorative element within Urbach's celebrated designs for Beswick. Combining graceful sculptural form with practical function, the piece serves equally well as a decorative object or flower vase. A Hungarian-born sculptor and ceramic designer, Kathi Urbach joined Beswick in the early 1950s, bringing a distinctly modern sensibility to the renowned English pottery. Her work is recognised for its clean, flowing forms and stylised interpretations of birds and animals, many of which have become some of Beswick's most collectible Mid-Century designs. Today, Urbach's ceramics are increasingly sought after by collectors of twentieth-century British pottery for their sculptural quality, timeless aesthetic and relatively limited production compared to Beswick's better-known animal figures. The underside bears the Beswick factory mark together with Kathi Urbach's facsimile signature and the impressed model number. Presented in very good vintage condition, with light surface wear to the underside consistent with age and use. There are no chips, cracks or repairs.
