James Coignard was an influential French modernist whose legacy is defined by his restless technical experimentation. Though his artistic roots were shaped by early interactions with masters like Henri Matisse and the bold color theory of Marc Chagall, Coignard eventually forged an independent path that bridged the gap between tactile abstraction and concrete imagery. His most significant breakthroughs came in the late 1960s, when he pivoted toward the pioneering realm of carborundum engraving (gravure au carborundum) In the mid-20th century, Goetz shared carborundum engraving (gravure au carborundum) technique directly with Coignard. Rather than biting into metal plates with chemicals, this method utilized an industrial silicon carbide abrasive (carborundum) suspended in a synthetic liquid binder. Coignard painted this gritty paste freely across his matrices. Once hardened, the raised, sand-like surfaces formed a dimensional plate that could be heavily inked. When driven through a high-pressure press alongside thick, handmade rag paper, the resulting prints featured an intensely debossed, sculptural texture. For Coignard, the carborundum plate functioned exactly like a canvas. It allowed him to bring the rich, layered impasto of oil painting directly into the printmaking medium. His graphic works became celebrated for their unique aesthetic hallmarks:
Dimensional Geometries: Deeply embossed, physical ridges that react dynamically to ambient room light.
Saturated Chromatic Depths: A porous matrix surface that absorbs ink heavily, rendering intense, fiery blood reds, shocking cobalt blues, and absolute midnight blacks.
Cryptic Symbolism: A signature visual language dominated by floating numbers, isolated letters, and sweeping, energetic lines.
"My work is an artistic adventure. — an aesthetic playground
where structural lines,
spontaneous swashes of color, and cryptic symbols intersect.
In the carborundum plate, I found a medium that possesses the weight of a canvas and the soul of a sculpture.
It is not merely about pulling an image from a surface, but about pressing form, texture, and deep chromatic melody directly into the fiber of the paper."
— James Coignard
Through this mastery of texture and gravity, Coignard transformed prints from flat reproductions into heavy, three-dimensional monuments of sensory art. His highly expressive carborundum graphics achieved global acclaim and are preserved in major international cultural repositories, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco [renjeau.com
