item :
a splendid double-bulb vase, with two small gilded handles connecting the central section of the upper body to the neck of the lower body. Both units have a truncated cone shape, entirely hand-decorated with green bands and stylized primitivist-style horse motifs on a white background. The surface is enriched with a refined beaded decoration in relief, achieved by applying minute drops of enamel, all in light relief. The piece bears the signature "etrusca deruta" under the base and dates to the mid-20th century. The mark identifies a specific high-end commercial line, produced by one of deruta's historic manufacturers (most likely ars artigiana deruta or c.i.m.a.) starting in the 1950s. During that period, to meet the strong demand from the international market and foreign collectors, deruta workshops launched dedicated series called "etrusca" or "ars etrusca." the aim was to combine the ancient silhouettes and filigree zoomorphic iconography, typical of the geometric and pre-roman periods, with the modern technique of rusticated enamel and precious gold finishes. This piece is stylistically attributable to the work of master serafino volpi, one of the most authoritative innovators of 20th-century deruta majolica, for three clear characteristics: the textured relief with dots of white enamel (known as faux cameo workmanship), the juxtaposition of sinuous profiles with gold-plated gold finishes on the handles, and the choice of archaeologically inspired faunal subjects. These distinctive features elevate the piece to an excellent example of his artistic school.
