The splendid workmanship and refined color scheme, evidently of the highest quality, suggest an attribution to a highly talented artist working in Bologna in the second half of the 17th century. This composition, depicting the Virgin in prayer, bent over to adore the sleeping Child, with the infant Saint John the Baptist behind her, is another example of the great Bolognese pictorial culture of the late 17th century.
