Etching on laid paper realized in 1672. An important engraving from Pietro Santi Bartoli’s renowned series reproducing the reliefs of the Column of Trajan, depicting a dramatic episode from the emperor’s Dacian campaigns. The composition captures the chaos of battle and retreat as Dacian cavalry attempt to cross a river, while heavily armoured Sarmatian horsemen advance in support of King Decebalus. At right, Roman forces occupy a fortified position, gathering the fallen and preparing to repel further attack. The scene is among the most dynamic narratives represented on Trajan’s Column. Bartoli masterfully translates the ancient sculptural relief into a vivid engraved composition, preserving both its archaeological accuracy and dramatic intensity. Swirling waters engulf men and horses, creating a powerful sense of movement and peril, while the densely packed figures, shields, and armoured cavalry demonstrate the artist’s exceptional command of line and form. The explanatory Italian text engraved beneath the image identifies the episode and reflects the scholarly purpose of Bartoli’s celebrated publications. Produced during the seventeenth century at the height of European interest in classical antiquity, these engravings became indispensable references for historians, antiquarians, artists, and Grand Tour collectors. Good impression with strong, clear engraved lines and well-preserved detail throughout. Minor age-related toning and handling wear consistent with the age of the sheet. Margins are preserved.
